Opportunity Overview
Our firm has been selected to provide systems engineering design services for a U.S. government scientific research program estimated at over $1 billion for the design and construction of a high-priority, innovative U.S. research asset. The initial Design Stage is estimated to span 2 years with a follow-on Construction Stage which could last 7 to 10 years.
RS Consulting is currently awaiting an award decision and announcement from the government and once received, additional details can be shared. In the interim, we are prepared to extend a contingency hire offer for this exciting and unique opportunity.
Job Summary
RS Consulting is seeking a talented senior systems engineering contractor to become a part of the systems engineering team that is tasked with specifying the system during the Design Stage using model-based systems engineering (MBSE) methodologies.
The successful candidate will have experience creating model-based, high-level designs and verifying the technical designs of complex systems. Though MBSE is being used as the methodology and tool, it is not a substitute for strong systems engineering design skills which is a priority for this project.
You will be at the forefront of creating and managing a complex system design using model based engineering practices. You will play a key role in translating and decomposing stakeholder needs into a mature design using Systems Modeling Language (SysML). You will leverage SysML and modeling tools to ensure comprehensive and traceable system requirements, designs, and analyses. This position involves close collaboration with cross functional teams to ensure the design meets all stakeholder requirements.
This position requires multitasking, creative out-of-the-box thinking and commitment to own and lead a range of systems engineering activities and model-based design artifacts in an industry where systems engineering is relatively new.
Ability and equipment to work remotely with less than 10% travel is required. MBSE software will be provided. Security clearances are not required.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Collaboration and Communication: Ability and willingness to work closely with science and infrastructure subject matter experts to learn the mission and hardware/software needs/details/constraints/regulations and integrate learnings and feedback into the high-level design. Lead cross-functional integrated product teams.
- Requirements Management: Translate customer and stakeholder requirements into a detailed, traceable system model while ensuring alignment with project objectives. This will involve decomposing functional requirements into subsequent levels of detail into subsystems, components, etc.
- Design-Oriented Modeling: Develop and maintain interconnected SysML model diagrams within the requirements, behavioral, and structural pillars of the MBSE methodology.
- System Design & Analysis: Use SysML to perform system architecture design, behavior modeling, and functional decomposition. Conduct design options analyses and create trade studies reports.
- Interface Definition: Define and model system interfaces, ensuring a full successful integration of the science mission into the research infrastructure and accurate depictions of system interactions to support integration and design coherence.
- Verification of Technical Design: Facilitate model-based verification of the technical design to ensure compliance with the high-level design.
- Model Management and Documentation: Ensure proper model version control, configuration management, and documentation. Promote best practices in model organization and maintain traceability. Document all aspects of model-based design and ensure models adhere to industry standards and best practices.
- Tool Proficiency: Utilize and integrate MagicDraw/Cameo Systems Modeler into design workflows, ensuring compliance with MBSE methodologies.
- Issue and Change Management: Identify, analyze, track and resolve design issues and proposed design changes incorporating into the design model and repeating design verification activities as needed.
- Process and Product Improvement: Identify and implement improvements to MBSE practices and the model structure and hierarchy.
- Design Reviews: Produce design documentation and prepare model-based design exports and materials to support informal and formal design reviews, as well as inquiries from the customer and stakeholders. Lead system engineering informal design reviews.
- Technical Management Support Activities: Support the systems engineering team with:
- Executing technical risk management,
- Planning and documenting Integration, Verification, Validation and
- Commissioning activities and testing, which will be conducted during the follow on Construction Stage, and
- Developing a Concept of Operations (CONOPS) based on the final design.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- Master’s degree preferred in Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience: 10+ years of professional experience in design-focused systems engineering roles, with demonstrated proficiency in SysML modeling and MBSE techniques. o 6+ years of professional experience leading systems engineering design development.
- Technical Skills:
- Strong expertise in SysML and one or more SysML-compatible tools (e.g., MagicDraw, Cameo Systems Modeler, IBM Rational Rhapsody).
- Strong understanding of system engineering processes and lifecycles, including requirements engineering, system architecture, and design.
- Experience with configuration management and version control for models.
- Soft Skills: Excellent communication, collaboration, problem-solving and interpersonal skills. Ability to translate complex technical concepts into understandable terms for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Certification (Optional): INCOSE CSEP, ASEP, or other systems engineering credentials are a plus.
Application Instructions
To apply, please submit your resume and a cover letter highlighting your experience leading design-focused MBSE activities, experience with SysML and any relevant systems engineering projects.
